NWAS Community First Responders

In medical emergencies, the first few minutes can be vital. Early intervention and support before the arrival of ambulance clinicians can make a significant difference.

Community First Responders (CFRs) are volunteers recruited, trained, equipped and deployed by North West Ambulance Service to provide early support within their local communities. CFRs receive training in areas such as Basic Life Support (BLS), CPR and defibrillation, and may be equipped with specialist response equipment to support them in their role.

When a 999 call is received by North West Ambulance Service, an ambulance response is dispatched. Where appropriate, an available CFR in the local area may also be alerted to attend and provide early assistance until ambulance crews arrive.

North West First Responder Group supports CFR volunteers through community engagement, fundraising, wellbeing support, uniforms, vehicles, and ongoing volunteer CPD Sessions.
